TURNING Lives Around is taking the opportunity to celebrate our male colleagues during Men’s Health Awareness Month with a gift of green tea.
Also known as Movember, Men’s Health Awareness Month started in 2003 encouraging men to grow a moustache for charity and sparking discussions around men’s health. It aims to promote awareness around conditions that disproportionately impact men such as heart disease, diabetes and mental health disorders at a time when men in general are facing a health crisis that often goes under the radar.
On average men die four – five years earlier than women and many of the deaths are preventable. Suicide is the biggest cause of death amongst 15-49-year-old men and millions more battled untreated mental health conditions. Physically, cancers such as prostrate and testicular, impact millions each year but reticence to get checked out prevents early detection and treatment.
This year Men’s Health Awareness Month is focusing on preventative care, healthy lifestyle choices and mental health support. This ties in nicely with raising awareness of men’s wellbeing, one of the purposes of International Men’s Day which also takes place half-way through November. It’s theme this year is ‘celebrating men and boys’, highlighting the positive value that men bring to the world, their families and communities.

TLA is combining both themes this month and at our recent Leadership Forum kickstarted celebrations for male colleagues with a message of gratitude for the part they play in supporting clients and preventing homelessness.
We also provided some handy hints for staying healthy such as regular exercise, talking to peers for support and getting at least eight hours sleep a night. A healthy diet was also included and to set them on their way, each male colleague is receiving a sample of green tea.
Containing certain nutrients with substantial health benefits for men, green tea is widely regarded as one of the healthiest drinks available with a recommended intake of three – five cups a day.
