Woodside: Building confidence and independent living skills
TANIA* came to live at Woodside after returning to Wakefield and sofa surfing with family.
She had been evicted from her previous home because of issues around hoarding and complaints from neighbours. She was in poor health both physically and mentally after repeated migraines had led to falls which had also impacted her self-confidence.
On arrival at Woodside Tania was reserved and, lacking in confidence, she felt isolated. The Woodside team worked with her to develop trusted professional relationships and over time, encouraged her to join in with activity groups such as TV, baking and crafting.
As Tania’s confidence grew, she made friends with the other service users and began to lead baking sessions. She responded well to support from staff, looking after herself and her flat better, maximising her income through benefit awards and getting involved in volunteering where she could pursue her interest in horses.
Within 12 months of being at Woodside, Tania was maintaining her flat with prompts and ready to move on. A few months later she was offered a home with assisted living and she accepted. The Woodside team has stayed in contact with Tania who is reportedly loving her new home.
