Sustain: Support through bereavement
WITH his wife in a care home, Peter* was living alone and struggling with managing his home alongside poor physical and mental health. Under constant pressure from his landlord, Peter felt overwhelmed and not in control of his life or home.
Peter had been referred to Sustain previously but had declined the support. This time he began to engage with his Housing Support Worker (HSW). They recognised his health needs and contacted his GP who in turn reached out to provide treatment and refer to pain management. Focus then switched to the home, and with his HSW’s support, Peter began to declutter.
Sadly, his wife unexpectedly passed away leaving Peter very vulnerable. With no remaining living friends or family, Peter felt very isolated, and his mental health declined. His HSW stepped in, supporting him with organising the funeral and dealing with all matters regarding his late wife.
Eventually Peter felt ready, and the decluttering restarted. In a better place physically and mentally, Peter carried this through himself, taking his time but achieving the goals he was working towards. As a result, he is now ready and able to manage the tenancy of his home independently.
