Verna Gordon

Housing Support Worker at OWL Seacole

Experience: Verna has worked with Turning Lives Around (TLA) for over 20 years and has previously worked with a range of organisations to support vulnerable young people, including Leeds City Council.

I feel 110% confident in the work I do for Turning Lives Around and feel immensely supported by my management and colleagues.

My role as a Seacole Housing Support Worker involves helping vulnerable young people to gain and sustain a property and lead a healthy, independent life. We risk assess the service user and provide a tailored support package based on their needs. This can involve a range of services, from mental health support and education through to support with benefit applications.

I was first attracted to Turning Lives Around due to the team’s approachability. Workers treat each service user and staff member with equal respect, which fitted perfectly with my own values.

As a mother myself, I thoroughly enjoy working with young people and find it hugely rewarding to work with TLA. TLA is like a home away from home – it’s like working with one big family!

TLA offer a well-rounded service with tailored support for those most vulnerable in society. As this can be a challenging job, TLA also offer excellent wellbeing support for workers.

Turning Lives Around are constantly expanding and listening to service user needs. I have recently seen the introduction of the new Housing First service in partnership with Basis and the start-up of SUSTAIN Wakefield.

Staff are given excellent training opportunities and are constantly learning to provide the most innovative and up to date support possible.

I would highly recommend working for Turning Lives Around and their services to other people.

If I were to sum up TLA in three words, it would be: teamwork, growth and stability!
