Raising funds to bring Christmas cheer

THE festive season kicked off in fundraising style for staff at Turning Lives Around with a morning of Christmas themed online activities.

Starting with a fitness workout, the morning included a Christmas Quiz, Festive Room 101, Christmas jumper competition and TLA Team version of Family Fortunes. The aim was initially to raise £350 but with this amount already in the bag before the fundraising events had even started, the target was revised and set at £1,000 which has also been exceeded.

The money raised is funding Christmas Care Packages for homeless people on the streets of Leeds as well as those men, women and families in Turning Lives Around’s temporary accommodation. The care packages will contain such items as toiletries, socks and gloves plus sweet and savoury items to eat.

The fundraising and collation of the packages is being organised by TLA’s Street Support Worker Katy Sanderson. She explained: “TLA has many dedicated support workers who work all year round with some of society’s most vulnerable men, women and children due to homelessness, mental and physical health issues, lack of income or benefits, alcohol and drug misuse or loneliness.

“As rewarding as it can be helping our clients, often at the most difficult times in their lives, we all feel they need an additional positive boost at Christmas, especially this year with the added impact that COVID-19 is having.”

Hundreds of care packages are currently being collated and will be handed out to people in need in the coming weeks in the run-up to Christmas.

“We have been blown away with the response to the fundraising. Staff ‘paid as they felt’ to take part in the activities which were held online due to COVID restrictions but terrific fun nonetheless and we’ve also had donations from friends, family and partner organisations we work with. It will really help us make a difference and bring some seasonal good cheer to the lives of people for whom Christmas is often just another day to get by,” said Katy.
