Dual success for Turning Lives Around
TURNING Lives Around has scored a double success for 24-year-old Ria thanks to our Carr Beck and Clean Start projects.
At a low ebb after a relationship turned sour Ria turned to drink and started going out in the city mixing with bad company and getting into trouble. Determined to help herself she came to TLA for support and was referred to our Carr Beck scheme. Unique in its work it provides specialist support allowing women to monitor and manage their own alcohol use.
With support from the Carr Beck team Ria established her own Alcohol Management Plan enabling her to reduce her intake and limit the times she drinks. Very quickly, Ria has reduced her alcohol use limiting it to evenings only.
At the same time as working on her alcohol management she set about developing a plan to improve her chances of returning to employment. With support from the Carr Beck team Ria was able to improve her CV and application skills.
When the chance of a part time job with our Clean Start social enterprise arose she applied and was successful. Thanks to a grant from the Leeds Community Foundation Ideas That Change Lives Fund Ria has a new job as a decorator for our expanding Clean Start.
Already two months in to her new job she’s loving it and the difference Carr Beck has made to her life.
“I was at a very low ebb but knew that I wanted to change. Managing my alcohol use and learning some new life skills has made a massive difference,” she said.
Janet Spencer, CEO of Turning Lives Around said: “Carr Beck was a leap of faith when we set it up more than 20 years ago. Speaking to Ria and hearing how we help demonstrates it was faith well placed.”
